"Well," my GP said, "you don't have an infection, but you do have an enlarged prostate. What we call BPH, which stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia". She explained that the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder, passes through the prostate gland and if it becomes enlarged, it grips the urethra tightly and causes pain, urination frequency (particularly at night) and an inability to empty your bladder completely.
Well, those were my symptoms exactly!
But she also said that if left untreated, it could turn into an inability to pee at all, which would require an emergency admission to have a catheter inserted through the penis directly into the bladder. A procedure as unpleasant as it sounds and one to be avoided at all costs.
The Prescription
A Life Sentence
My doctor prescribed a capsule containing Dutasteride and Tamsulosin.
These are sold under the brand names Duodart and Doubluts, depending on where you live in the world.
Mine was Doubluts, but they are both exactly the same.
I was to take one capsule daily, with food.
So a regular breakfast habit.
For the rest of my life!
Now this was something I wasn't at all happy about, but felt I had no choice.
As the alternative was far worse.
But here's the big question.
Did the capsules work?
Well, the answer is yes(ish).
By the time I started taking them, I was waking up 5, 6 or even 7 times a night to go to the toilet and there was severe pain involved.
The need to pee came on me urgently, which meant that whenever I travelled, my planning had to include the availability of public toilets along the route.
