Amazingly, it's not that long ago since no one was talking about ED (Erectile Dysfunction) in men. So what's changed?

The Desire Is There But ED Sabotages The Execution

ED Prevents Satisfactory Sex

One thing that's changed is the availability of statistics that show you that you're not alone.

Over 40% of males over 40 suffer from ED and a huge 70% of males over 70!

That's around 70 million American males who can't get it up, either some of the time or all of the time.

And remember, that's got nothing to do with a lack of desire. You could be looking at the image above and thinking "Wow, she wants me" but if your little head isn't aligned with your big head, there's little you can do about it.

And the other thing that's changed is that it's no longer embarrassing to talk about it.

Attitudes have changed.

We recognize that we are all, both male and female, entitled to an enjoyable sex life well into our old age and beyond.

And while an erect penis inserted into a wet and willing vagina isn't the only available expression of hetero sex, it's an option we all like to have available.

ED From Big Pharma

Erectile Dysfunction and Viagra

It's no wonder that the big pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer have jumped onto this avalanche of money begging to be spent on bedroom performance.

But the products they have produced have indifferent effects at best and dangerous side effects at worst.

The three most commonly prescribed erectile dysfunction remedies are the pharmaceutical pills sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).

Do they work to fix ED? Well, yes, for some of the men for some of the time.

Do they have side effects or long-term problems? Definitely.

For instance, do not use any of these ED medications if you take nitrates, such as nitroglycerin or a similar medicine, for chest pain as the combination can cause dangerously low blood pressure.

If you take alpha-blockers for blood pressure or prostate problems, don't take Viagra or any of the other ED medications. These can lower your blood pressure when taken with ED pills.

Viagra, Cialis and Levitra all work in a similar fashion to bring you erectile dysfunction remedies and all have common side effects. The most common side effects include upset stomach, flushing of the neck, face, or chest, headaches, heartburn, stuffy nose, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Memory problems and back pain have also been reported, along with more serious side effects, including allergic reactions such as

  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hives

None of these are something you want to happen during sex!

In addition, their effect can simply wear off after time. They simply stop working as your body adjusts to taking them and you are left worse off than when you started. In contrast, natural alternatives that you can read about at Natural Erectile Dysfunction Fix tend to become more effective the longer you take them. They have a cumulative effect.

In more recent news, the Cialis and Viagra lawyers at Saiontz & Kirk, P.A. are reviewing potential lawsuits for men throughout the United States who have been diagnosed with melanoma after using the popular erectile dysfunction drug.

Recent research has suggested that side effects of Viagra and Cialis may increase the risk of skin cancer, particularly involving melanoma, which is the most dangerous and life-threatening form.

Natural Treatments for ED

Older Couple No Erectile Dysfunction

Before I get into natural treatments for erectile dysfunction, I want to briefly examine some not so natural, but unfortunately all too common "unnatural" treatments for ED.

Prescription Medications. I've already covered these, but it's worth repeating that these are unnatural treatments. They are manufactured drugs with unfortunate side effects.

Vacuum Pumps. Surprisingly popular, readily available from sex shops both on and off line and effective in the (very) short term. The effect may not last long enough to complete the act and using one can feel uncomfortable to downright painful. The band placed around the base of the penis can cut off blood flow and cause injury. Not recommended.

Penile Implants. I shudder at the thought, and you should too. Why anyone ever thought this expensive, invasive procedure was a good idea is beyond me. The surgery involves placing inflatable or flexible rods into the penis. Inflatable rods require a device filled with saline solution and a pump hidden in the scrotum. When you press on the pump, the saline solution travels to the device and inflates it, giving you an erection. Later, you can deflate the device again. I always imagine a girl telling her friends "my new partner has this really strange habit; he squeezes his balls for 5 minutes every time before we have sex."

Reconstructive Surgery. Vascular reconstructive surgery is an attempt to improve blood flow to the penis to help a man with erectile dysfunction (ED) get and keep an erection. A surgeon transfers an artery from a muscle in the belly to one in the penis. This creates a path for blood to move around the problem area. Doctors rarely recommend the operation, though, since it's technically difficult, costly, and doesn’t always work.

Enough about unnatural treatments for ED. Let's examine some natural treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Panax Ginseng

Called the herbal Viagra, Panax ginseng (red ginseng) has solid research behind it. Researchers reviewed seven studies of red ginseng and ED in 2008. Dosages ranged from 600 to 1,000 mg three times daily. They concluded there was “suggestive evidence for the effectiveness of red ginseng in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.”

Rhodiola Rosea

One small study indicated that Rhodiola Rosea may be helpful. Twenty-six out of 35 men were given 150 to 200 mg a day for three months. They experienced substantially improved sexual function. This herb has been shown to improve energy and reduce fatigue. More studies are needed to understand action and ensure safety.

DHEA

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural hormone produced by your adrenal glands. It can be converted to both estrogen and testosterone in the body. Scientists make the dietary supplement from wild yam and soy.

DHEA has been identified as an option for treatment of ED for men with concurrent diabetes. ED commonly affects these men because of hormonal issues as well as diabetes complications that interfere with blood flow to organs.

Yohimbe

This supplement is extracted from the bark of the African yohimbe tree. Some studies have shown positive effects on sexual performance with use of this drug.

However, the American Urological Association doesn’t recommend yohimbe as an ED treatment. This is because there’s not a lot of evidence proving it works. Its side effects might be damaging to health. These include increased blood pressure and heart rate, irritability, and tremor.

Acupuncture

Though studies are mixed, many show positive results when acupuncture is used to treat ED. A 1999 study, for example, found that acupuncture improved the quality of erections and restored sexual activity in 39 percent of participants.

A later study published in 2003 reported that 21 percent of ED patients who received acupuncture had improved erections. Other studies have shown conflicting results, but this treatment has potential and may work for you.

Jackhammer

Marketed under the delightful trade name of Jack Hammer, this all natural ED treatment is a combination of 5 proven ingredients.

Tongkat Ali: Rich in the natural chemical that turns your package into a “pocket rocket”... Has what doctors are calling truly amazing penile stiffening effects so you can achieve long, hard and lasting erections practically on command!

Maca: The ancient Peruvian herb that’s been enhancing male sex drive for more than 3,000 years… South American natives call it the Peruvian Boner-Pill… and when you combine it with tongkat ali… you’ll feel like you’ve been gifted with brand-new libido that doesn’t quit!

Tribulus Terrestris: A study from Medical University in Bulgaria found this herb increases sex drive by a whopping 79% in men with low libido… and completes the three-headed monster sex-drive formula with tongkat ali and maca… so you can be a BEAST in the bedroom again!

Grape Seed Extract: A study from the Journal of Urology found high blood pressure and poor circulation are a dead giveaway that you have erectile dysfunction… but all it takes is a special ingredient inside grape seed extract to open up blood vessels and fill up your “manhood” for extra thickness and staying power.

Cistanche Tubulosa: Legend has it cistanche tubulosa was the go-to virility herb for military hero Genghis Khan. (He ate it everyday… and slept with hundreds of women… and now 8% of the Asian population have his genes!)
